The Path of Least Resistance
There are two beliefs which are useful to question when asking why change feels like wading through treacle.
People are trying to get away with something.
People find change difficult.
When we start with these beliefs we get the same set of possible actions - maybe we need more process, some subtle coercion, more comms, explain the why again, buy some training on ‘managing change’ or ‘resilience’, exert more control, trust a few proven people to do the bulk of the heavy lifting, work around the ‘difficult’ people, let the ‘difficult’ people go…
But when we let ourselves believe something different - that most people are trying to do a good job and, actually, most people are open to change - we have to think differently about the real causes of friction.
In this video, I explain what may be going on and why we take a different approach from conventional leadership training or organisational change management.
(Apart from enjoying the process of working with AI to animate this I should point out that there is some weird stuff going on in this video visually. So, first time through just enjoy the weird stuff! Second time through listen to the voiceover!)
